9.6 lakh vacancies till March, says govt, but mum on hirings | India News

NEW DELHI: The Centre has told Lok Sabha on Wednesday that there were 9,64,359 vacancies for jobs in the government, till March 2022, but failed to furnish numbers on how many recruitments have been made so far, in those vacant posts.

Replying to questions from TMC MP Mala Roy and TDP member Nama Nageswara Rao, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the number of government vacancies in the last 10 years and what the government has done to fill those posts so far, minister of state for the PMO, Jitendra Singh, in a written reply said, regular recruitments have been happening on a “mission mode” from time to time, especially through rozgar melas (employment fairs) in different parts of the country.
The minister said, “as per the Annual Report of Pay Research Units of the Department of Expenditure, the total vacant posts in government departments, as on 01.03.2022, was 9,64,359.”

He added that, “the central ministries/departments/central public sector undertakings/autonomous bodies, including health & education institutes, public sector banks etc, make recruitment either directly or through recruitment agencies, such as Staff Selection Commission, Union Public Service Commission, Railway Recruitment Board, Institute of Banking Personnel Selection etc. Filling up of vacant posts in various ministries/ departments is a continuous process. As part of Rozgar Mela, the vacant posts are being filled in a Mission Mode. Rozgar Mela events are being held across the country and the new appointees are being inducted into various central ministries/departments/ central public sector undertakings/ autonomous bodies/public sector banks etc. DoPT has been directing ministries/departments of the Central government, from time to time, to fill up vacant posts in a time bound manner.”
Roy and Rao had asked “Will the Prime Minister be pleased to state: the details of the total vacant posts existed in government departments including corporations and other government agencies across the country during the past ten years as on 30/06/2023; whether all the vacancies were filled up during the past ten years, if so, the details thereof, year-wise and if not, the reasons therefor; and the action taken/proposed to be taken to fill up all the vacancies and the time by which the recruitment will be completed?
